Blood oranges have been grown in the Mediterranean since the 18th century. The unique flavor of blood oranges combines citrus notes with a distinct raspberry-like aroma. The deep color of blood oranges is due to the anthocyanin pigments which develop when evening temperatures are low. The pigments and their phenolic precursors give blood oranges a high antioxidant value than other oranges.
